Smart Dust: MEMS
Smart dust consists of a series of the circuit and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) that have sensors, cameras, and communication mechanisms to transmit the data they collect back to a base in order to process. Smart dust can detect light, temperature, vibration, magnetism, or chemicals. MEMS consist of extremely tiny miniature elements, often integrated together with electronic components.
Smart dust combines sensing, computing, wireless communication capabilities, and autonomous power supply within the volume of only a few millimeters. Typically, MEMS are fabricated using the same methods used to make integrated circuits. New developments in 3D printing have significantly reduced the cost and time necessary to create microelectromechanical systems, in turn boosting their uptake. It is certainly within the realm of the possibility that future prototypes of Smart Dust could be small enough to remain suspended in air, buoyed by air currents, sensing and communicating for hours or days on end.
